Silversmithing Classes in Ottawa

Are you interested in learning the ancient art of metalsmithing and creating silver jewelry? If so, you've come to the right place. In October 2023, I began teaching metalsmithing workshops in collaboration with Loretta Studios and Gallery in Ottawa, Ontario.

Currently, we are offering the Metalsmithing 101 course in two formats: a five-week Wednesday evening course and a two-day weekend intensive course.

This course will teach foundational techniques, including using bench tools such as hammers, pliers, a jeweller's saw, files, and a flex shaft (rotary tool). You will also develop sawing and piercing skills, learn soldering techniques using an oxygen-propane Gentec little torch, practice forming techniques using hammers, pliers, and dapping tools, add texture and dimension to your pieces, polish and finish metal, and create findings like clasps, ear wires, and jump rings.

Using these tools and techniques, you will create a hand-forged sterling silver link bracelet, saw-pierced copper or brass earrings with silver ear wires, and a mixed metal soldered pendant.

The class is limited to four students, ensuring a hands-on learning experience with plenty of dedicated instruction and bench time. Design ideas will be provided, but you are also welcome to bring your own ideas.

If five weeks or a full weekend feels like too much of a commitment, you can dip your toes into silversmithing by taking a three-hour evening workshop.
